STUDENT CONVENTION

* “Thou” / by 7th National Students of Architecture Convention Coordination Committee

Students of METU Department of Architecture are hosting the Seventh National Students of Architecture Convention this year from 5th to 8th February. The convention that will be concentrating on the theme “thou”, is being performed with support from METU Presidency, Cultural Affairs, Faculty of Architecture Dean, and Mimarlar Derneği 1927 (Architects’ Association), Türk Çimento Müstahsilleri Birliği (Turkish Cement Producers Union) and MESA. The convention that summons to produce with the motto “Produce and imagine together”.

* Violation of the Law in the Capital City of 2002 / by Ş. Sezar Aygen

Motivated by the architectural modification of Emlak Bankası / Petrol Ofisi building in Kızılay, the central district of Ankara, Arif Şentek refers to some documents and four verdicts about architectural property rights. At the same time, he conveys the outline of the text of agreement on “Intellectual Property and Copyright” that was agreed upon in principle at the UIA general assembly last year. Aygen writes on the modification procedures of the building, as the second part of “Architecture and Copyright”.

With this first issue of 2003, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our journal which was first issued in 1963. In our 40th year file, we encounter the scope of architectural periodicals publication with a “forward-looking” view. The questions we have addressed to editors of national and foreign journals of architecture may be summarized as: a) Visions of architectural journalism; b) The future of architectural journal publications in the face of digital media; c) Possible positions of architectural journalism in the face of globalisation. Responses from editors of Architectural Design, l’Arca and Domus are together with eight national contributions... Particularly aimed at brainstorming on interactions between published and digital media, the file is completed by the evaluation of Yücel Gürsel, Chairman of Turkish Chamber of Architects.

The round table meeting discussions on permanent post-earthquake housing areas that have speedily been implemented by the Ministry of Construction following the Marmara Earthquake in 1999. Authors of implemented projects together with Kadri Atabaş representing the Publication Council of the Journal, Oktay Ekinci as president and Murat Balamir and Baykan Günay as consultants, have joined the discussion. Difficulties and deficiencies in bringing life to those “housing towns” of a total 42.000 dwellings rapidly produced are brought to the table. Güven Erten presents an analysis of the implementation process of permanent post-earthquake re-housing schemes.

* Earthquake Adapted Settlements Architectural Ideas Competition / Project Proposals

Organized by the Turkish Chamber of Architects in order to derive, discuss and expose architectural ideas to guide urban renewal as necessitated by seismic threat, this competition has been held at two stages. The jury gives 3 equal prizes and 5 equal mention awards among 11 projects. Following the evaluative review of Selim Velioğlu, head of the jury, prize winning projects are presented with jury evaluation reports.

In this 40th year issue, we are commemorating Somer Ural, an important figure of a period when a political stance was very significant at the Chamber and the Journal. This text reflecting deep affection about Ural who died young in February 1975, witnessing a special part of the Chamber’s history. The portrait of a leading figure with an overriding political identity besides architectural achievements, sensitivity, humanism and contributions to the Chamber...

An Adverse Province in the Republican Capital: Keçiören

The province of Keçiören, a residential area of Ankara, lacks a center accommodating commercial and social activities in urban sense. The district is heading for a specific phyisical identity gradually for the last ten years. Within this framework, Önder Aydın, Nuray Bayraktar and Ela Tekkaya are presenting the multifaceted and deep changes in the face of the province due to the ideological involvement of local authorities after the last two municipal elections.

Modernism And Nation Building: Turkish Architectural Culture in The Early Republic

Sibel Bozdoğan, the architectural historian who has been publishing her articles on the professional history of architecture and early republican Turkish architecture in national and foreign journals and presenting them in various seminars and academic conventions from early 80’s onward, has published her book “Modernism and Nation Building: Turkish Architectural Culture in The Early Republic” in year 2001. This book has been published in Turkish in November 2002. Gülsüm Baydar is reviewing Bozdoğan’s book which offers an overview of the political, historic and ideological context of architectural culture in the recent history of Turkey.
